Financial Abuse of the Elderly

This can take several forms, such as withholding money that the elderly person needs to live for daily expenses, forced change of will, or wrongful use of a Power of Attorney or guardianship or trustee responsibilities.

Other forms of abuse are various forms of consumer violations that may include forcing or tricking the elderly person to sell a home or possessions, forging a signature on pension checks or legal documents or pressuring an elderly person to provide services for no payment. Depending on the nature of the abuse, criminal sanctions may be appropriate as well as attempts to gain recovery or compensation through the courts. This type of abuse is insidious and may be difficult to detect because it typically occurs over a period of time.
